Dear Ellis:: Not Your Ordinary Birth Story

Dear Ellis,

When I first heard that you would be joining our crazy family this past Valentine’s Day I have to admit that I was scared. I’ve never been very good with change. The future, the unknown if you will, has always scared me. What would life look like once you were here? What would you look like? How would you change our lives forever? I knew that I would love you because you are the extension of one of the people that I love most in this world — my sister. If you were a part of her, it’s inevitable that I would love you unconditionally too. And Ellis, it’s so true. I love you more than you will ever know.

And you know what? You are a miracle. Not just because you are a whole new and perfect tiny human; but because you saved your mama’s life. You see, little one, your mommy unknowingly suffered an appendicitis when she was only 29 weeks along. The doctors didn’t know it at the time yet, but because she was pregnant with YOU, she’s alive. Her body went into “protect the baby” mode and formed a pocket around the toxins in her body from her ruptured appendix. She was in immense pain — couldn’t move or even sit up — for 2 weeks. They doctors thought that she had maybe torn her round ligament, so they put her on bedrest. She shouldn’t have survived maybe more than 2 or 3 days, but because of you… she did. You shouldn’t have survived the rest of her pregnancy, but because of you… you did.

You are barely 3 weeks old now, but I am already indebted to you. So thank you, sweet boy, for being a fighter. For keeping you and your mama safe. I don't know what I would do without you two. Looking back and seeing what should have happened brings me to my knees. I am so so thankful for your life. I am so so thankful for God’s protection over you both. The doctor’s have told us repeatedly how lucky we are that you are both still alive; but we know it has nothing to do with luck. We know that it’s because God has His hands around you both. You are truly meant to do great things in the world. God has a purpose for your life. God has a purpose for your mommy’s life; and I can’t wait to watch you grow and see what His plans for you are.

Sweet boy, our family is so smitten with you. Your sweet, sleepy smiles. Your dimples. Your perfect nose, fingers, ears and toes. Your new baby smell. Your soft full head of hair. The noises that you make when you’re eating and sleeping. You’ve brought so much joy to your mommy and your daddy. I’ve never seen your daddy smile and light up the way he does when he sees you, when he talks about you, when he holds you. I’ve never seen your mommy more in love. She is constantly exhausted but you would never be able to tell by looking at her because all you’ll see is her joy because she’s your mommy. She still has a long road ahead of her, but because of you she has all the will power in the world. You are her inspiration, her love, her drive. So thank you, sweet Ellis, for being you and for being here.

I promise to always be here for you, to love you and protect you. To encourage you in whatever you choose to do in this life. You are a miracle, and I’ll never let you forget it. <3

Love always,
Your Auntie Summer
